The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recently implemented an indefinite suspension of internet services throughout the entire country. This decision to block mobile broadband services has been executed in accordance with the directives issued by the Ministry of Interior.
The motive behind this action stems from the widespread protests that ensued subsequent to the arrest of Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in relation to the Al-Qadir Trust case.
As a result of this measure, not only have mobile broadband services been disrupted, but it has also been reported that major social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become inaccessible to numerous users in Pakistan since the initiation of these protests.
The circulation of videos exhibiting the violent nature of these demonstrations via social media platforms played a pivotal role in the decision to block mobile broadband services. The spokesperson for PTA acknowledged the receipt of reports regarding disruptions on social media platforms, although their authenticity could not be officially confirmed.
According to reliable sources, the circulation of “unwarranted” video clips depicting the protests on social media led to disruptions on various platforms starting from 8 p.m. on Tuesday, resulting in significant inconvenience for the citizens.
The suspension of internet services has generated concerns among the public due to its implications, limiting their ability to access crucial information, communicate, and engage with digital platforms. At present, neither the PTA nor the authorities have provided any indication as to when the restoration of internet services can be expected.
As the situation unfolds, it is imperative for citizens to remain informed through alternative means of communication and adhere to official instructions in order to ensure their safety and well-being during these challenging times.
